Welcome to Les Charmettes, a lovely house situated in a haven of nature just a mile from the city centre. This is where Jean-Jacques Rousseau, one of the most famous writers and philosophers of the 18th century, spend “the short happiness of his life”, as he words it himself.
He stayed there numerous summers between 1736 and 1742, when he was in his twenties, accompanied by his lover, Mme de Warens. All of the ingredients of his happiness were gathered : he was surrounded by nature, which inspired him a lot in his philosophical works, he would walk every day, which helped him to organise his thoughts, he could spend time playing music and reading, two of his passions, and he was with the woman he loved.
After the French revolution and Rousseau's death, les Charmettes became a place of pilgrimage for his admirers. George Sand, Lamartine, Byron and thousands of others came from all over the world to see where Rousseau had lived.
Today, this remarkably well preserved house still bears Rousseau's presence and personality. It is still very close to the descriptions he made in his autobiographic books “Les Confessions” and “Reveries of the solitary walker”, where the last paragraph reads : “A lonely house on a valley slope was our place of refuge, and it is there that in the space of four or five years I enjoyed a century of life and a pure and complete happiness".

The house is open daily except Mondays, from 10:00 am to 06:00 pm, from March to October ? It’s closed from October to February.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau soggiorna alle Charmettes con Madame de Warens tra il 1736 e 1742. Lì, scopre i piaceri della natura, si dà alla sua passione per la musica e prosegue la sua formazione teorica ma anche sentimentale accanto a la donna che chiama “Maman”.
Ma le Charmettes sono anche presto diventate un vero e proprio luogo di pellegrinaggio dopo la morte di Rousseau e la Rivoluzione Francese nel 1789. in effetti, all’inizio dell’Ottocento, quando Georges-Marie Raymond il futuro Conservatore del Museo delle Belle Arti di Chambéry si sistema alle Charmettes, decide di aprire le porte della dimora ai visitatori. Di più, un libro d’oro viene istallato affinché quali venuti da tutto il mondo a rendere omaggio abbia la possibilità di firmarlo e di esprimersi sulla casa e il suo celeberrimo inquilino.
Oggi, quella dimora al marchio “Casa degli Illustri” ha attraversato il tempo e resta segnato dal soggiorno dell’eminente Rousseau. Potrete approfitare di quella atmosfera tanto speciale e bucolica in quello palazzo storico che ha visto numerosissimi personaggi. Potrete anche approfitare del giardino, tra i meli, i viti e le diverse piante, che offre una stupenda vista su Chambéry e le sur montagne circostanti.
